"I've been back into my 'museum'. I've been re-visiting my past. Better I copy myself, before somebody else does," joked a jubilant Roberto Cavalli, celebrating his 41st year in fashion at Milan Fashion Week tonight. A glimpse backstage before the show, revealed he was absolutely right.

The rails were hung with silk chiffon, imprinted with cheetah and leopard spots, tiger and zebra stripes. Gilded 'armour' - designed to replicate the contours of a woman's body - was placed carefully on chairs. An accessories table groaned under the weight of metal chokers, torques and pendants, bristling with feathers.

The show was staged in a giant white tent erected beside Milan's famous Arco Della Pace; the catwalk resembled an Art Deco installation - a long stretch of dark, wooden boards, framed within black, silver and white stripes and ornamental tiles.

The front row celebrity line-up included the singer, Kelly Rowland, the actress, Michelle Yeoh, and Duran Duran's Roger Taylor, who performed with the band at a special Fashion Week gig organized by Hogan and Italian Vogue, at the Teatro Dal Verme, last night.

The collection represented a 'greatest hits' of Roberto Cavalli, updated with renewed emphasis on ornamental hand-craftsmanship. Leather jackets were encrusted with elaborate silver passementerie. Pre-Raphaelite, bias-cut gowns in claret, black and silver devore velvet grazed the floor over lace-up, spike-heeled velvet boots, and were accessorised with ornate, tribal neck-pieces, and opened down the back to reveal gleaming metal bodices beneath.

Other gowns were bedecked with embroideries reminiscent of antique Chinese shawls. Cheetah-print chiffon jeans were slung low on the hip to reveal glimpses of gilded torsos, bedecked with embellished metalwork beneath. Low-slung, pleated kilts, in a patchwork of tiger-stripe and leopard-print were worn with feather-worked biker-jackets. Cavalli took his bow, with wife, Eva, to rapturous applause.
