  On Thursday December 3rd 2009 Karl Lagerfeld unveiled his latest Métier D'Arts collection in Shanghai, entitled 'Paris Shanghai'.

  

  The Métier D'Arts collections were established in 2002 following Chanel's acquisition of the seven specialist Parisian ateliers that have collaborated with the house for decades: the metal-crafts house of Desrues; the feather-maker, Lemarié; the embroiderer, Lesage; the shoemaker, Massaro; the milliner, Michel; the goldsmith, Goossens; and the flower-maker, Guillet. Each year, Lagerfeld has created a Métier D’Arts collection, to showcase their works together with his own Chanel designs.

  

  The collection brings together the expert skill of these Parisian artisans and the Chanel ateliers to make a true French luxury.

  

  This is the eighth Métier D'Arts collection and follows Paris, Tokyo, New York, Monaco, London and Moscow, all locations which have a link to Chanel.

  

  Although Coco Chanel never visited China, she had a strong interest in Asian arts and antiques and Karl Lagerfeld has therefore brought to life the collection she never had the chance to create.

  

  Shanghai is also the site of a new Chanel boutique which has opened in the Peninsula Hotel.

  

  On an 85 metre-long barge set on the Huangpu river bordering the Bund, more than thirty models were used to bring Karl Lagerfeld's creations to life.

  

  With Shanghai's skyscrapers making a backdrop, Karl Lagerfeld revisits the Eastern Empire to give us his contemporary vision of Chanel.

  

  One by one, his inspirations appear - the "Terracotta Army", the urban romanticism of Chinese cinema, the glittering chic of the 1930s and the opulence of the imperial court.

  

  In the collection, long earrings and large pointed hats frame the face. Necklaces, brooches and cuff bracelets bring together pearls, coins and opulent stones.
