  • Autumn's Fashion Trends 2011 for Women

    18 August 2010

Autumn's Fashion Trends 2011 for Women:

To autumn (nearly), season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, reaper of the wicked sundress and emissary of fresh trends. Only “trends” is problematic as it signifies the fleeting – and this fashion phase is a volte face.

The chief missive is “timelessness” – not for the last time will the minimalism masterclasses of Phoebe Philo at Céline and Stella McCartney be cited. If you’re hunting for a pagoda-shouldered jacket, this is not the season. Rather, it’s time to put together decidedly un-starry pieces: a white blouse, buttoned to the throat, tautly tucked into slick wool trousers; a camel coat belted just so. Flashy has played swapsies with simple, and girlish Lolitas with all-woman Lollobrigidas.

Which walks us to the other autumn story: boobs and hips, and garbs that embrace said proportions – swishy circle skirts, saucy bustiers – are cool. Even hip glossy LOVE celebrates “all things feminine” in its new issue, gushing how “during Fashion Week, a more voluptuous woman was sauntering her way into the spotlight: a new feminine silhouette, a full-blooming figure whose roots lay back in the Fifties”.

Pared down versus in-your-face curves, minimalism versus maximalism: foes set for an epic autumnal wardrobe fisticuff, right? Only if they didn’t share a collective motto, Strictly for Grown-ups – a rallying cry that unites other visual spars like neutrals vs leopard prints, and trousers vs midi-skirts. The real war? Streamlining your buys for the new season: charge forth with this battle plan.

  • Fashion news 2010: Desert boots: the sandal's slayer

    18 August 2010

Fashion news 2010: Desert boots: the sandal's slayer: What to wear on holiday when your feet aren't up to scratch? Gareth Wyn Davies has found the solution in a pair of desert boots.

The annual holiday to stay with friends in Marrakesh looms soonish, introducing the very pressing issue of what sandals to take.

Yes, I am aware that statement is up there with "What black combustible rock should I take to Newcastle?" but I have particular reason to worry. When the world decided to get squeamish about men in sandals I think it was after glimpsing the gnarled roots of ginger that pass for my toes peeking out of a pair of Birkenstocks.

There is not a sandal that doesn’t make me look like a woodland creature or Hobbit, which is a pity because I’d thought I’d found the perfect pair in a shop attached to a monastery in Paris - very Dries Van Noten-does-Jesus-sandal but, at about £45, a fraction of the cost. And made by monks, too! What more can you ask for?

Anyway, I’m thinking these will now be kept for indoors; the rest of the time I shall make like Baden Powell and wear suede desert boots with a rolled up sock, a pair of baggy khaki shorts and perhaps a Breton top, especially having spotted these by Bottega Veneta  from Matches. If someone would just care to sub me £355…

  • Latest Victoria Beckham's Fashion collection 2011

    17 August 2010

Latest Victoria Beckham's Fashion collection 2011: The 'banded minidress' from Victoria Beckham's spring/summer 2010 collection has proved a resounding hit with A-listers on the red carpet. Most recently, Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger (left) stepped out in the design when making an appearance as a judge at the X Factor auditions in Manchester. American actresses Jennifer Hudson (centre) and Blake Lively also couldn't resist the peplum creation, with its quirky, three-quarter-length sleeves

    Celebrities wearing Victoria Beckham's designs - Nicole Scherzinger;
            Jennifer Hudson; Blake Lively

Celebrities wearing Victoria Beckham's designs - Naomie Harris; Jessica Simpson; Trudie Styler

The sleeveless variation of the 'banded mini' has proved just as popular. On British actress Naomie Harris, the dress looked super-sleek, while Jessica Simpson and Trudie Styler took pleasure of its generous pockets!

Celebrities wearing Victoria Beckham's designs - Victoria Beckham; Katherine Jenkins

Victoria Beckham has made the perfect transition from popstar to fashion designer, acting as the ultimate ambassador for her range. She has worn this elegant flared skirt dress on several occasions, showing its versatility on and off the red carpet. Katherine Jenkins was spotted at Wimbledon in the red version, epitomising smart, summer glamour

Celebrities wearing Victoria Beckham's designs - Melanie Chisholm; Victoria Beckham

Posh Spice's former band mates have also been flying the flag in support of her creations. Melanie Chisholm cut a fashionable figure when she attended the Laurence Olivier Awards earlier this year, in the 'Perault' body-skimming dress from Beckham's autumn/winter 2009 collection, a gown which Victoria herself has also stepped out in

Celebrities wearing Victoria Beckham's designs - Emma Bunton; Victoria Beckham

Fellow former Spice Girl Emma 'Baby Spice' Bunton, took a shining to the graphic-print dress from Victoria Beckham's spring/summer 2010 range. While she opted for a draped version, designer Victoria championed the strapless style

Celebrities wearing Victoria Beckham's designs - Selita Ebanks and Victoria Beckham

Model Selita Ebanks, a former Victoria's Secret 'Angel', looks a dead ringer for Victoria Beckham as she stepped out in the waist-cinching, cut-out dress from the spring/summer 2010 range

Celebrities wearing Victoria Beckham's designs - Victoria Beckham; Carol Vorderman; Mary J. Blige; Elle Macpherson

They say imitation is the best form of flattery, and it was the 'Carmontelle' dress that has proved to be Mrs Beckham's pièce de résistance. The sought-after style has been pictured on countless number of celebrities, who fell powerless to the snug-fitting, cashmere creation with peplum waist. After admiring V.B in the grey number, it wasn't long before Carol Vorderman, Mary J Blige and Elle Macpherson formed a polite queue to get their hands on one

Celebrities wearing Victoria Beckham's designs - Brooke Shields; Elle Macpherson; Victoria Beckham

Asserting herself as a true fashion icon, Victoria Beckham knows first-hand that everyone needs a fail-safe little black dress. So she created her own simple version, nipped in at the waist and with her signature, below-the-knee style. Brooke Shields and Elle Macpherson (again!), couldn't resist having one of these in their wardrobes

Celebrities wearing Victoria Beckham's designs - Drew Barrymore; Katherine Jenkins

The list of A-list fans just goes on and on. Both Drew Barrymore and Katherine Jenkins loved this deep purple, silk corset dress ...

Celebrities wearing Victoria Beckham's designs - Carrie Preston; Taraji P Henson

... a style which wasn't too dissimilar to this royal blue origami-style cocktail dress, which American actresses Carrie Preston and Taraji P Henson donned to their red carpet engagements

Celebrities wearing Victoria Beckham's designs - Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow, Hollywood superstar and red carpet bombshell, gave her nod of approval to Victoria Beckham's foray in to fashion by wearing her creations on more than one occasion.

Celebrities wearing Victoria Beckham's designs - Heidi Kulm; Victoria Beckham

Supermodel and mum Heidi Klum is also partial to Beckham's frocks. Looking chic in this low-cut design, Victoria demonstrated how to accessorise it with a furry, cropped jacket to keep out the cold.

Celebrities wearing Victoria Beckham's designs - Cameron Diaz

Cameron Diaz has also discovered that her slim but athletic physique is given the instant moviestar glamour-factor whenever she chooses Victoria Beckham collection.

  • Jacket fashion 2011: Men's Jacket trends 2011

    17 August 2010

A patch on a man's jacket used to be a sign of a repair job. Today it means you’ve been paying attention to the catwalks.

One of the overarching trends in menswear this season is the use of panels and patchwork on anything from biker jackets to T-shirts. And depending on how it is used, it can produce very different results.

All patched up - Dries Van Noten
Navy blue with white piping and red and white striped sleeves for an eccentric collegiate feel at Dries Van Noten

Raf Simons is a designer who is known for his modernist approach to structure and silhouette. For his own label (he also designs for Jil Sander), Simons added skinny panels of red wool into tailored black jackets, producing a De Stijl type graphic. He also created curious hybrids where wool overcoats featured large built in sections nylon and Velcro, giving an idea of where the evolution of the overcoat might take us. Simons’s man of the future is the heir to the Mod.

All patched up - Dries Van Noten
Dries Van Noten has used a patchwork approach this autumn with sleeves made from different coloured fabrics.

At Jil Sander, suiting was patched with panels of the same fabric, but were less geometric. The curved edge panels seemed to mould around the body; in gunmetal grey it has the look and feel of armour.

All patched up - Raf Simons
Raf Simons added panels of red for to the body and sleeves of his tailoring.

In the hands of designers with a more artisanal approach to clothing, such as Dries Van Noten, the use of a patchwork conjures up a more eccentric feeling. You’re going to need to be a bit more daring to tackle this one, where grey hoodies feature houndstooth arms, navy jackets sprouted white with red stripe arms and black trench coats are given camel-coloured sleeves.

Issey Miyake made the look feel a bit more street with mandarin collared shirts made from three different sizes of yellow and black gingham.

There are early signs of this on the high street, too. Asos’s own collection for men this season includes a khaki crew neck sweat pot with an interesting quilted panel on the elbows and one shoulder. Topman has produced a cotton shirt with chocolate brown corduroy on the shoulders which veers on the side of cowboy. But there’s bound to be more. It’s certainly a detail to keep an eye out for over the next couple of months.

The Royal College of Art graduate, Eudon Choi, cemented his “one to watch” status this month, as his design was chosen to feature in Elle’s main fashion story.

Shot alongside pieces by Chanel, DKNY and D&G, Choi’s navy wool coat with leather panelling will be in the pages of its September issue, released this week.

Choi’s career has been closely watched since his graduate masters collection was snapped up by Dover Street Market, and he already counts celebrities Sienna Miller and Jade Jagger among his many fans.

The magazine appearance comes after the former Twenty8Twelve designer was presented with the Vauxhall Fashion Scout Merit Award last week. Following in the footsteps of previous Merit Award winners Hermione di Paula, David Koma and William Tempest, the Korean designer will now receive a fully sponsored catwalk show during September’s London Fashion Week, and exhibition space in both London and Paris.

“I am incredibly excited to win the Merit Award. Being given the opportunity to do a solo show during London Fashion Week, with my second full collection, is more than I could have dreamed of,” said Choi. “The help and support of Vauxhall Fashion Scout with ‘Ones to Watch’ has been instrumental in moving my label forward and I know the Merit Award will bring me even greater exposure.”

Zoe Saldana, the sultry, high-flying star of James Cameron’s award-winning, sci-fi blockbuster, ‘Avatar’, has a new, more down-to-earth role as the ‘face’ and ‘body’ of Calvin Klein’s latest underwear collection.

Named ‘Underwear Envy’, the collection, for autumn/winter 2010, focusses on lingerie designed to create a more revealing silhouette. The range features three distinct levels of coverage, each one differentiated by the amount of cup coverage, as well as strap and band width.

Coverage 1, for example, has the minimal level of coverage for a sleek, sexy look. Perfectly Fit, the second option, provides mid-level coverage for classic comfort and modern style, while Seductive Comfort, at level 3, offers the highest level of coverage and support.

Zoe Saldana was photographed for the campaign by Mikael Jansson, in New York. The images will appear worldwide and will feature in the windows of the Calvin Klein flagship in Regent Street, London, W1, when the collection is launched at the end of August.

‘Underwear Envy’ comprises bras in sizes 32A-34DD, priced from £22-£32, and knickers, in xs-l, from £18.

Fashion news 2010: Models walk a mile in designer shoes: Helena Christensen is patroness of ‘The World’s Greatest Catwalk’ at this summer’s Copenhagen Fashion Week.

Models walk a mile in designer shoes

Carlsberg don’t make catwalks, but the Danes do, and this one will be the longest in the world. Denmark’s darling, the supermodel Helena Christensen, is patron of 'The World's Greatest Catwalk', the record-breaking culmination of Copenhagen Fashion Week on Saturday August 14th at 3pm, when the city’s celebrated pedestrian avenue ‘Strøget’, will be transformed into a giant pink runway.

Although not walking the runway herself, Christensen will make a speech to open the show in which 220 models will strut one mile (1.609 km) down the longest catwalk ever constructed. Big screens are planned to broadcast the show to over 100,000 spectators.

Christensen is the perfect figurehead for the event. At 41, and the mother of two children, her famous face and perfect pins are as sought-after now as they have ever been; in May this year she posed for Reebok in nothing but a pair of EasyTone trainers.

Christensen, like her fellow supermodels from the 1980's, Cristy Turlington and Linda Evangelista, has proved there is life after the catwalk, and is an acknowledged photographer and an avid environmentalist.

Organised by The Copenhagen Fashion Council, 'The World's Greatest Catwalk' is supported by the auction house, Kopenhagen Fur, and the fashion brand, Vero Moda. The project will feature more than 500 Scandinavian fashion labels aiming to raise their global profile. Max Factor and Wella are providing a 100-strong team of make-up and hair artists to ensure the Nordic beauties walk-the-walk in style.

  • Fashion news 2010: Liam Gallagher opens his first fashion shop in London

Fashion news 2010: Liam Gallagher opens his first fashion shop in London: Former Oasis frontman, Liam Gallagher, brings Pretty Green temporary shop to Carnaby Street.

Liam Gallagher, the former Oasis frontman, makes his debut as a fashion retailer in London tomorrow night (July 29th), with the opening of his first Pretty Green temporary store in Carnaby Street.

Pretty Green, named for a song by The Jam, is the menswear fashion venture set up last year by Gallagher.

It has already clocked up sales in more than 40 countries, and been snapped up by street-wise, style-conscious footballers such as Joe Cole and Jermaine Defo, as well as Paul Weller, who has recently joined the Pretty Green creative team.

The store will sell a selection of exclusive one-off Pretty Green designs, as well as the Green Label and Black Label spring/summer collections.

Pretty Green focuses on knitwear, suits, coats, jeans and outerwear, and its signature is attention to detail, with an emphasis on quality fabrics, cut and classic tailoring. It takes inspiration from the art, music and social culture scene of the 1960’s - hence the decision to open, albeit temporarily, on Carnaby Street, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Prices start from £45 for a crew-neck T-shirt, up to £675 for the Cavalry Twill "Fool on the hill" overcoat.

Gallagher, although not noted for regular appearances on the best-dressed lists, is an integral part of the design process. He works closely with the sharp-dressed, rock ‘n’ roll London tailor, Nick Holland, and has final say on all designs; nothing apparently goes ahead without his approval.

The 2,000 sq. ft store will occupy two floors with the basement area featuring a panoramic image of Liam Gallagher on Brighton Beach and a Lambretta Li 150 series 3 replica scooter.

  • Fashion news 2010: Zara Phillips talks about her first fashion collection

    29 July 2010

Fashion news 2010: Zara Phillips talks about her first fashion collection:The royal Eventing World Champion gives a sneak preview of her equestrian range with Musto.

Zara Phillips models designs from her collection,

Watch out Stella McCartney! There’s a young upstart thundering through the strata of stylish, functional sportswear design: Zara Phillips.

Zara Phillips models designs from her collection,

“Oh god, don’t call me a fashion designer!” she laughs, as she talks through her first-ever fashion collection for specialist sports brand, Musto. Despite her modesty (we like), the royal equestrian is well-placed to boast when it comes to designing for the arena – she is the current Eventing World Champion, no less.

Zara Phillips models designs from her collection,

“I tried and tested everything. With design, the products were already there - I just tweaked a few things, like put in a longer cut for the riding jackets, so it won’t expose the back if you’re riding in the elements,” she explains. “It’s less to do with mainstream fashion and more about practicality and engineering something that works in training, but which you wouldn’t be embarrassed to be seen in, in public.”

Zara Phillips models designs from her collection,

Two years in the making, the cryptically-named “ZP 176” collection (a combo of her initials and British Eventing number) consists of fleece-lined waterproof and windproof jackets, padded gilets and super-soft fleeces designed with the latest technology – think classy, functional pieces along the lines of McCartney’s long-term sportswear collaboration with adidas.

So, what does she think about McCartney’s recent appointment to revamp the kits of Team GB for the 2012 London Olympics, in which she may be competing? “Hooray, nicer outfits!”

Away from the world of jodhpurs and breeches, which designers does the rather glam 29-year-old, who is known to enjoy a cocktail at the odd soirée, admire? “Roberto Cavalli and Marchesa. One of my favourites is a lovely, empire-line, strapless, purple dress by Marchesa. I also wore a lot of Ashley Isham when he was starting out. One year [2002], for Ascot, I wore one of his grey jackets and shift dresses.”

Will there be a resurrection of the party-going, tongue-studded “royal rebel”, as the tabloids were keen to tag her? “I hardly go to things anymore, as I just don’t have the time. I have to train every day, every week.”

When I inquire about her foolproof beauty tip, she regards me bemusedly, before telling me she “has no routine, I’m very wash-and-go”, although as an afterthought she mentions she likes “Bobbi Brown’s shimmer palettes as it gives me a healthy glow.”

This young royal’s focus is very much on her sport and winning a place on Team GB. “Taking part in any Olympics is special, but to do it at home really would be a dream come true.”

Fashion news 2010: Thumbs up for Gap's new Premium Pant Collection :The brand's new trouser collection has one highly influential admirer in Virginia Smith of American Vogue.

Virginia Smith of American Vogue in Gap's Perfect Trousers (centre); the Boy Fit (left) and the Modern Boot (right)

Where have all the trousers gone? That lament, silently shared by every woman who’s despairingly searched for a great pair of tailored trousers over the past decade, is about to be stilled. For someone who defines herself as a “trouser person” rather than a “dress person”, it has, let’s face it, been a bad old ten-year rap. As fashion frothed itself into a monomania over dresses, well-cut pants practically went to the wall. And, when the silly-trouser phase hit, we got dropped crotches, dhotis, genie pants and things called “carrots”. Talk about insult to injury.

But anyone who’s scanned a front row and spotted the watching, rangy, blonde-haired woman who sits next to Anna Wintour in the shows can take heart. She’s Virginia Smith, American Vogue’s influential fashion market and accessories director, and possibly the fashion world’s most tenaciously exemplary trouser person. Come hell or high hemlines, Smith is likely to be sitting there with her long legs encased in one of her personal collection of chic pants, from Proenza Schouler, Céline, Marc Jacobs or Balenciaga. “I never met a wide-leg pant I didn’t like,” she laughs. “They’re my complete staple. Even when fashion’s been against pants, I’ve always figured out a way to wear them.”

It might be that, as of yesterday, this insider’s insider’s sphere of style influence can be calculated on a much wider international scale – visible in every Gap store. Smith happens to be married to Patrick Robinson, head designer at Gap, which has delivered its first Premium Pant Collection, a range of smart, well-fitted tailored trousers.

One of them, the Perfect Trouser, with its slight flare falling over the shoe, is so quintessentially Smith-looking it could easily be renamed the “Virginia Pant”. More than that, its leg-lengthening properties and hint-of-the-Seventies cut puts it plumb-centre as an ideal component purchase for autumn’s smartened-up, tailored dressing.

Smith laughs off the notion that watching her get dressed in the morning might have influenced her husband. “He would never in a zillion years say that,” she demurs. Still, her espousal of trousers as personal belief is so strong that in May she loped into the Gap-sponsored Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum on Robinson’s arm, wearing a Givenchy haute couture trouser suit, making her one of the only women to resist the pressure to go pink and frilly – and this on a night which was co-hosted by both her boss and her husband. “I’m not really a gown person,” she shrugs. “I’m much happier in something which is as close to a T-shirt and a pair of pants as possible.”

That feeling, for a more stripped-down, less fussy and more American way of dressing, is something Smith applauds. “It’s just refreshing to see designers like Stella McCartney, Chloé, Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors going back to that sportswear simplicity. They all cut great pants for fall. And I have to say the Gap ones, at £35, are pretty good, too.”

  • Fashion news 2010: Dolce & Gabbana and Chelsea Football Club

    29 July 2010

Fashion news 2010: Dolce & Gabbana and Chelsea Football Club: Dolce & Gabbana to lend a little Italian style, signing three year fashion partnership with Chelsea Football Club.

Dolce & Gabbana and Chelsea football club

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, alongside sketches of the new Dolce & Gabbana Chelsea uniforms

Dolce & Gabbana, the Italian designer label, has signed a three-year fashion partnership with Chelsea Football Club.

The style deal means we can expect to see the likes of John Terry, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka and Ashley Cole out on the town in exclusive, dark blue, three-piece suits, with matching shirts and ties, designed by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, the same duo which dresses George Clooney, Morgan Freeman, Sir Mick Jagger, Bono, David Beckham - and AC Milan, among others.

Chelsea Manager, Carlo Ancelotti, a former Milan player, will wear the same suit, but will be distinguished by a light blue shirt.

The contract includes formal and casual wear for all players, coaches, management and male staff. The female staff’s ‘kit’ will feature a pair of must-have Dolce & Gabbana black high heels and a black trench-coat. Dolce and Gabbana will also re-design the club directors’ lounge in the West Stand at Stamford Bridge, as well as the club’s main office reception area.

Blue, the colour associated with Chelsea, is the design theme around which all the clothes and accessories revolve; it is also the colour for the exclusive Dolce & Gabbana logo on the clothes tags, which would normally be white.

Two outfits were created for the players: the dark blue suit, featuring the lion rampant reguardant crest embroidered on the pocket of the two-button jacket, and worn with a dark blue shirt, dark blue jacquard tie, black shoes and belt; and a pair of five-pocket, blue denim jeans with a button-down blue poplin ‘Martini’ shirt, and black calfskin trainers. A black wool/cashmere coat, with peak lapels completes the wardrobe. Players and staff will also be equipped with a blue leather trolley-case with Dolce & Gabbana metal tag.

The Dolce & Gabbana Directors’ Lounge will also feature walls, furniture and details in blue, with oak floors and gold and silver accents.

Dolce & Gabbana, established in Milan by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana in 1985, is one of the most powerful Italian fashion brands in the world, with a relationship with football dating back to 2004. That year, the duo launched the book, ‘Calcio’, a personal tribute to football players, seen as the new icons of contemporary masculine style. Forty-four players, three teams and two coaches, all dressed in Dolce & Gabbana, were photographed by Mariano Vivanco. Dolce & Gabbana has consistently dressed AC Milan - the two designers’ favourite team - and also provided the formal uniforms for the Italian team, the 2006 Football World Cup champions.

Earlier this year, Dolce & Gabbana launched a new underwear campaign inspired by the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, and starring a number of leading Italian footballers, including Antonio Di Natale and Vincenzo Iaquinta.

    21 July 2010

Fashion news 2010: Pearl Lowe collection hits Peacocks: Pearl Lowe's high summer capsule collection hits stores today, after Daisy models in ad campaign.

Pearl Lowe’s high summer capsule collection hit Peacocks today (July 21st), boosted by a sultry advertising campaign featuring her daughter, Daisy.

Based on British festival style, the collection comes in time to dress the crowds of The Secret Garden Party, The Big Chill, Reading, Leeds and Bestival, which are all still to come this summer.

“I grew up visiting festivals with my mum and even now plan my summer around the festivals I want to get to. This summer I know all my girlfriends will be asking to borrow mum’s summer collection” says model, Daisy, 21.

However, Pearl, 40, who is the wife of Supergrass drummer, Danny Goffey, insists the collection shouldn’t be pigeonholed: “Every dress has been designed to look equally as fabulous at Glastonbury as it would on a summer evening at Kenwood or Glyndebourne, or even sat at work dreaming of the next weekend away”.

Peacock’s buyer, Jane Hotz, is thrilled with the success of the partnership between Pearl and Peacocks: “Pearl’s collections have been a huge hit with our customers. We’re delighted to offer customers designer fashion at such great value”.

Following this success, Pearl has extended her range with accessories, to go with her signature vintage-inspired dresses, playsuits, jeans, Tees and cardigans. Starting at £18, and going up to £40, the collection is available in sizes 8 – 16, from Peacocks stores and online now.

  • Men's summer fashion trends 2011: Men's suits for the summer heat

    21 July 2010

Men's summer fashion trends 2011: Men's suits for the summer heat:

From left: Reiss, Dunhill and Uniqlo
From left: Reiss, Dunhill and Uniqlo

Sometimes, all that’s needed is a bit of perspective. The smartly dressed men of Britain have had a little respite from the heat this week, but the uncomfortable days of suit-wearing in summer heat can continue into September. For some global businessmen, though, the temperature in Britain in the past few weeks is nothing. From them, lessons can be learnt on how the British should cope with our much more moderate summer.

“Here in Hong Kong it is 35C and 98 per cent humidity for months on end,” says Rob Mancini, the managing director of Alfred Dunhill in the Asia Pacific, where the brand has more than 80 stores selling suits to men who have to look smart, whatever the temperature. Even in that climate, wool is still the best option for the sharpest silhouette. “This sounds hot,” says Mancini, “but go for suits made from 'high-twist’ wools that are open weave so the fabric breathes easier.”

Such a weave helps air pass through the cloth and stops the suit feeling like a walking heat trap. Mancini says that construction is also important. “A suit should be unlined, or half-lined, which means the lining has not been built in, making the jacket much lighter and more breathable.” Mancini says he personally isn’t a fan of linen, “as I hate looking so crumpled,” but has a couple of cotton suits for more casual trips and meetings. He also points towards Dunhill’s suit made from Camdeboo, the first shaving of mohair, similarly breathable due to the quality of the yarn (£795, 0845 458 0779).

It is in such highly developed cloths that many brands are making big advances in summer-appropriate suiting. “These interesting new blends and thinner yarns make it possible to create suits that are fresher, lighter and so much cooler,” says Alessandro Sartori, the creative director of Z Zegna. Sartori is based in Milan, where its smartly dressed men shrug off regular summer temperatures above 30C. “In the past, it was difficult to wear a gaberdine suit in the summer, but we now have a cotton-silk blend gaberdine suit that is very slick, smart and cool (£1,450, 020 7518 2700).”

Sartori also points towards the technical advances at his brand’s parent label, Ermenegildo Zegna. “They have a fabric called Cool Effect,” says Sartori, “that has a nanotechnology application in the finishing process of the fabric that makes the cloth cooler than the air temperature. So if it’s 30C outside, the fabric of the jacket is 20C.”

Sartori says that, in Milan, there are no qualms among businessmen about wearing beiges and light colours in an office environment. And it is here that the advice gets very us-and-them, because it’s fanciful to think the British workplace will ever lose its hang-ups over tradition. Sartori recognises this and says that suits in compromise lighter colours are becoming popular. “Before, we were selling suits in dark grey and blue; now we’re selling mid-grey and mid-blue. It’s a colour palette that can be worn for two to three months, not just when summer is at its hottest.”

Back in the UK, it seems like some of these messages about summer suits are getting through – just very slowly. “There are so many disasters out there wearing their heavy winter suits in the summer,” says Andy Rogers, brand director of Reiss, a resurgent label that has gained much ground from realising that young men still want sharp tailoring as part of their wardrobe mix.

“I think the best way to cope with the summer is to start separating your suits. Then tailoring can be much more adaptable.” The Reiss customer is one who is much more likely to get away with wearing a T-shirt under a suit jacket at work, and Rogers points towards Germany football manager Joachim Loew as an example of such smart-casual dressing.

Rogers says that in the younger creative industries, half-lined jackets are becoming more accepted, and are even being bought when the weather cools down, because these men are getting used to the lighter, more versatile feel of the construction. Such simple, practical suits are found at many places on the high street, and it’s something at which Japanese label Uniqlo excels, with half-lined office-appropriate suits in both its mainline range (from £24.99. 020 7290 8090) and also +J, its range designed by Jil Sander (from £39.99).

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. As with so much of British life, it is at Marks & Spencer that the true state of the nation can be gauged. “Our customer still expects structure,” says Adam Barton, M&S’s buyer for men’s suits, which quashes the idea of an imminent, half-lined revolution in offices up and down the land. “It’s an interesting dilemma, to try and make a garment that’s as lightweight as possible within the restrictions we have. Our customers want a suit that won’t make them sweat, but, at the same time, they don’t want a suit to collapse.”

Barton’s answer to this is a lightweight suit that still has enough padding and lining to reassure his customers that they are getting perceived value-for-money. “It has a lightweight chest canvas and fusing, as well as a lightweight shoulder pad that really keeps the structure.” Barton says the suit (£149, 0845 302 1234) was introduced to 10 stores this summer and has been such a success that he intends to go big on it come next summer. He is also proud of a fabric called Miracle Linen, which he says is “to a certain extent, crease-resistant. And if you wear it for a prolonged period, it only needs a gentle iron and the creases come out.”

It seems that progress will be made in small steps, but there are other more everyday tips for suit wearers. Don’t treat the lunch hour like it’s a mini-holiday: keep out of the sun and stay in the shade. Wear shirts with a buttoned cuff, so there’s less fabric at the wrist and it’s easier to roll up the sleeves. Whenever possible, take off the jacket to try and keep cool. And, until we all hot-desk from home or trade from our bedrooms, remember that while we Brits think we’ve got summer bad, remember there are businessmen elsewhere who have got it much worse. If we follow their lead, we can deal with it much better.

  • New fashion 2010: Prada launches new sunglasses campaign shot by Steven Meisel

    16 July 2010

New fashion 2010: Prada launches new sunglasses campaign shot by Steven Meisel: The sleek capsule collection, inspired by the notes of jazz, is unveiled in New York.

Problem: how do you evoke the melodic notes of jazz in the design of a pair of sunglasses? Cue answers from Prada, which unveiled a new “Swing” capsule sunglasses collection in New York last night.

In jazz-speak - boffin specs on - "swing" means the smooth turn from one chord to another – hence the sunglasses’ slick lines, and muted ivory, black and tortoiseshell colour palette.

The arty image and video campaign, shot by Steven Meisel, features the supermodel, Angela Lindvall, in the role of a chanteuse, airing a Betty Draper-esque bouffant and donning the Swing frames.

The Fifties riff complements Prada’s forthcoming winter collection, which was heavy on the kind of nip-in, flare-out dresses – a key silhouette come autumn – of the period.

The launch also features a “Manga” competition in which illustrators will be invited to create a manga-style heroine with a starring role in a Prada publication. The only rule? She must be wearing the Swing frame.

We’re visualising an animated version of Gwen Stefani, circa her Harajuku girls phase, via Wonder Woman, sprinkled with a dusting of Prada kook – and topped off with the sunglasses, of course. As Duke Ellington sang: "It don't mean a thing, if it ain't got that swing".

Prada Swing, £125, at Prada boutiques and selected retailers worldwide from October
